Humanitarian Aid for Jews
As is known, Canada was not an occupied country and did not directly face Nazi aggression during World War II. However, Canadians did not stand idly by amidst this tragedy. In Toronto, and other cities across the country, men were mobilized, industries were repurposed, and training centres were established. Furthermore, Torontonians played a crucial role in supporting Jewish communities facing persecution and the threat of annihilation in Europe.
It is worth noting that Toronto residents actively participated in providing humanitarian, financial, and informational assistance to Jews in danger. In general, city residents organized fundraising efforts through Jewish and charitable organizations, which directed resources to support Jewish refugees and Holocaust victims. These funds were used to purchase medicine, food, clothing, and also to finance underground rescue networks in Europe.
Toronto was also home to Canadian Jewish communities that supported international organizations like the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC or “the Joint”), which coordinated aid to Jews in occupied zones.
Canada Accepted Jewish Refugees
During World War II, Torontonians disseminated information about the scale of the Holocaust, organizing lectures, exhibitions, and public events to raise awareness within Canadian society about the tragedy of the Jewish people and to call for action. Moreover, Jewish community organizations in Toronto lobbied the Canadian government to ease immigration restrictions and accept more Jewish refugees, saving them from Nazi persecution. The Horrors of World War II
Sometimes it’s hard to comprehend that people can inflict such suffering on others solely based on their nationality. But, unfortunately, these are not fabrications, but real facts. The Germans carried out the extermination of Jews. For example, the Jewish population was forcibly relocated to special urban areas – ghettos – where they were isolated from the rest of the people. Jews were stripped of their rights and their property was confiscated. Furthermore, Jews were forced into slave labour, often leading to exhaustion, disease, and death.
Also during the war, special SS units – the Einsatzgruppen – were active. The occupiers conducted mass shootings of Jews in hundreds of towns and villages in Eastern Europe. It should be noted that victims were rounded up, forced to dig mass graves, and then shot. And then there were the death camps and gas chambers… The Nazis established special extermination camps (Auschwitz, Treblinka, Sobibor, Belzec, Chelmno), where people were murdered using poison gas in sealed chambers. They also used mobile gas vans, which asphyxiated victims with carbon monoxide.
Torontonians were right to sound the alarm and pressure the Canadian government to simplify the immigration system for Jewish refugees. They understood that Jews were being deliberately exterminated. These were the horrific events of World War II, which must be remembered so that they are never repeated.
