The Ukrainian Diaspora in Toronto: What We Know
The Ukrainian diaspora in Toronto is considered the largest in Canada. Generally, Ukrainians began to settle in Toronto in large numbers from the early 20th century. Vyshyvanka Day in Toronto
As you know, a full-scale war began in Ukraine in February 2022. Russia’s aggression was condemned by many nations. In response, Ukrainians in Toronto decided to organize an important cultural and civic event – Vyshyvanka Day, which took place on May 19, 2022.
The history of this holiday actually dates back to 2006. Lesya Voronyuk, a student at Chernivtsi National University named after Yuriy Fedkovych, suggested that students wear vyshyvankas (traditional embroidered shirts) to classes to emphasize national identity and promote Ukrainian culture. Since then, Vyshyvanka Day has evolved into an international holiday. Incidentally, it is celebrated annually on the third Thursday of May.
However, in 2022, Vyshyvanka Day in Toronto took on special significance, serving as a symbol of solidarity with the Ukrainian people. The event was organized with the support of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Toronto Branch and other Ukrainian diaspora community organizations.
On May 19, 2022, a large-scale “Vyshyvanka March” (Embroidered Shirt March) took place in the metropolis, with hundreds of Ukrainians and friends of Ukraine participating, all dressed in traditional embroidered shirts. It was an incredibly beautiful sight. Ukrainians, alongside other nationalities, demonstrated a powerful display of unity, patriotism, and cultural identity. Notably, Toronto prepared for the holiday in advance, with the traditional “Vyshyvany Vechir” (Embroidered Evening) held on May 11th. This event, which started back in 2011, supports the living tradition of the vyshyvanka in the city.
