She attended a French school until eighth grade. At the age of 13, her parents divorced, and she moved with her mother to Thornbury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Martha earned her undergraduate degree in international relations from the University of Toronto. She later pursued law at York University\u2019s Osgoode Hall Law School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While still a student, Martha married and became a mother. She welcomed her first child in 1981, followed by two more in 1983 and 1985.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Beginning_of_Her_Legal_Career\"><\/span>Beginning of Her Legal Career<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Martha\u2019s professional journey began in corporate and commercial law at the international law firm Baker McKenzie. Later, she served as General Counsel and Executive Director at Bell Mobility and Mobility Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She then joined The Rider Group, where she was Vice-President and Chief Legal Officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1996, Martha founded <em>The General Counsel Group<\/em>, a legal and management consulting firm specializing in high technology and telecommunications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Entry_Into_Politics\"><\/span>Entry Into Politics<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Liberal Party\u2019s defeat in the 2006 elections led to Paul Martin stepping down as party leader. On February 8, 2006, Martha announced her candidacy for the Liberal leadership race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her ambitious grassroots campaign helped offset her lack of widespread recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Martha described herself as a fiscally conservative yet socially progressive candidate.
